Figure 8 Train Racing 8-6-11 RMR West Valley City, UT

Three cars chained together. The car in the front has a driver and an engine but no brakes. The car in the back has a driver and brakes but no engine. The car in the middle has no brakes, no engine, and no driver.

Racing in a figure ensures that once these things get going, the frontman and the brakeman need to agree whether to go or yield. You can imagine what comes next.

Keep your eye on the purple "Plum Crazy" train. They have a big wreck early in the first half knocking the rear wheel completely off the axle. A few laps later the brakeman is desperately trying to gain control and getting whipped around violently as they approach the crossroads.

Here is what the car looked like after the race:

If you haven't been to one of these races, I'd highly recommend it. Even if you don't like racing, who doesn't like car crashes?

Japan Tsunami From Street Level

(download)

This isn't my video.

I got a link to the raw file from this tweet:

RT @seanbonner Seriously, this first person Tsunami video is one of the scariest things I've ever seen. http://ow.ly/4dvh0 via Echofon Jeremy Franklin

Later, I also saw the same link mentioned on boingboing.net:

James MacWhyte, a US citizen who lives in Tokyo, is reported to have shot this six-minute video of the Japan tsunami destroying a town in the northern part of the country. While I cannot yet independently confirm that the video was shot by Whyte, or the location shown, various observers have ID'd the site as Kesennuma, in Miyagi Prefecture.

The Posterous player is much better so I moved it here.

I find it fascinating that over the period of about 6 minutes, the entire street disappears. There is a car hastily driving away from the wave right at the beginning. Seconds later there is a boat coming down the street.

Near the end of the video, there are entire buildings being pushed down the street. The spot where the guy was standing now seems to be under several feet of water. All of this in just a few minutes.

Amazing.
